City of Dubuque Ward 4 Special Election

Election Date - March 29, 2022

Only those residents who live in the City of Dubuque Ward 4 can file and vote in this Election.
Candidates wishing to file for the vacant Ward 4 seat in the City of Dubuque need to fill out an Affidavit of Candidacy and Nomination papers. Candidates will need to collect 28 signatures from residents who live in Ward 4. All paperwork must be filed with the Dubuque County Auditor, 4th Floor of the Courthouse.


Important Dates and Deadlines

  • January 4: First day to request mailed absentee ballots for Primary election only. Please note that absentee ballots for the Regular City of Dubuque Ward 4 Special Election cannot be requested until January 18th. 
  • January 3 – February 4: City of Dubuque Ward 4 candidate filing period. File with Dubuque County Auditor, 4th floor of the Courthouse. Papers must be filed in the Dubuque Auditor’s office by 5:00 p.m. on the 4th
  • Tuesday, January 18: First day to request mailed absentee ballots for the Ward 4 Special Election. Please note that absentee ballots will not be mailed until after March 9th.
  • Monday, February 7: City of Dubuque Ward 4 candidate objection deadline 12:00 pm (noon). Withdrawal deadline, 5:00 pm.  Dubuque Auditor’s office open until 5:00 p.m.
  •  Wednesday, February 9: Primary, first day absentee ballots can be available for City of Dubuque Ward 4 Special Election. First day to mail out absentee ballots.  Ballots may not be available yet, please check with the Auditor’s office.
  • Monday, February 14: Voter pre-registration deadline for Primary Election, 5:00 p.m. Voters may still register after this date using election day registration procedure (ID and proof of address required). Correctly completed Voter Registration forms post marked by 2/14/2022 are considered timely even after received after this date.
  •  Monday, February 14: Deadline to request mailed absentee ballot for Primary Election. Request forms must be in our office by 5:00 p.m. (post marks don’t count)
  • Monday, February 21: County Auditor’s office will be closed in observance of President’s Day. 
  •  Friday, February 25: Last day to submit written challenges to absentee voters for City of Dubuque Ward 4 Special Election. Auditor’s office will be open to 5:00 p.m.
  • Monday, February 28: Last day to vote in-person at the Auditor’s Office for Primary Election. 
  •  Tuesday, March 1: Primary Election Day, City of Dubuque Ward 4. Vote Centers open 7 a.m. until 8 pm. All absentee ballots must be received by 8:00 pm to be considered on time to be counted.
  •  Thursday, March 3: Canvass by Board of Supervisors. 
  • Friday, March 4: Recount request deadline for City of Dubuque Ward 4 Special Election. Requests must be filed in writing by 5:00 p.m. with the Auditor.
  •  Wednesday, March 9: First day absentee ballots can be available for City of Dubuque Ward 4 Special Election. First day to mail out absentee ballots.  Ballots will probably not be available until the end of the week or the beginning of the next week, please check with the Auditor’s office.
  • Monday, March 14: Voter pre-registration deadline, Ward 4, 5:00 p.m. Voters may still register after this date using election day registration procedure (ID and proof of address required). Correctly completed Voter Registration forms post marked by 3/14/2022 are considered timely even after received after this date.
  •  Monday, March 14: Deadline to request mailed absentee ballot. Request forms must be in our office by 5:00 p.m. (post marks don’t count)
  •  Friday, March 25: Last day to submit written challenges to absentee voters for City of Dubuque Ward 4 Special Election. Auditor’s office will be open to 5:00 p.m.
  • Monday, March 28: Last day to vote in-person at the Auditor’s Office Ward 4 Election.
